- The whole event can take around 3 hours
- The day before the Sama:srayanam, please have only fruits or juice at the night.
- In the morning you should have a shower (head bath) and come to the venue wearing new or freshly washed dry traditional Indian clothes (gents should wear dhoti and uttareeyam; women should wear saree preferably or salwar).
- On the day of Sama:srayanam, empty stomach is recommended.
- After you arrive at the venue, you will be seated along with other seekers of Sama:srayanam. Acharya then provides them with 5 blessings (Samska:ra:s). Those are: Pundra, Ta:pa, Na:ma, Manthra, Ya:ga.
A:shram is the place of abode of the teacher, a:shraya is one who has come seeking refuge. Joining with others who are also seeking knowledge is sama:srayanam. When a person is ready and willing to be initiated, they approach A:cha:rya (Guru) with a request. A;cha:rya chooses the auspicious day and time when usually in the morning time. The seeker (either as individual an or woman or man or as married couple) comes to A:cha:rya after having had a bath (symbolising purification) and wearing new or freshly washed dry clothes. The A:cha:rya then provides them with 5 blessings. Those are: Pundra, Ta:pa, Na:ma, Manthra, Ya:ga.
- Ta:pa Samska:ram – Receiving Sankha(Conch) and Chakra (Disc) marks on the upper arm as a symbol of unwavering and steadfast commitment
- Pundra Samska:ram – Pundra, or tilaka marks, are vertical lines drawn on the body. The sastras interpret these vertical marks either as symbols representing the Temple of Hari, or as His footprints. Being shown how to wear 12 pundras (dwadasa pundra/tilak) to signify that this body is indeed a abode of Lord Srimannarayana and thus the 12 important sense organs are indeed 12 names of the Lord (Kesava, Narayana and so on until Damodara)
- Na:ma Samska:ram i.e. New da:sya name is given. Receiving name means that one understands one’s self to be a servant of Vishnu. In the Sri Sampradaya of Ramanuja, the dasya name of Ramanuja Dasa is suffixed. Being given a da:sya nama so from now on the person can identify themselves as Adiyen Ramanuja Dasan
- Manthra Samska:ram – Being taught three important mantras- Tirumantram or Ashtakshari mantram, Dwaya mantram, and Charama slokam;
- Ya:ga Samska:ram or Deity worship – Using the mantra which he/she has received from the teacher, the student begins the worship of salagramasila or sri murti, the Deity of Vishnu. Also taught how to do daily tiruvaradhana, and associated discipline regarding food habits and about satvik food
- After taking shower, perform Sandhya:vandanam and give 3 arghyams to Sun devatha.
- Daily chant Ashta:kshari maha: manthram and take sripa:da thi:rtham 2 times
- Perform Thiruva:ra:dana – Click here for more details
- Eat only Sa:thvik food as Prasadam
Yes, you are voluntarily seeking this initiation. Receiving an important and sacred manthra and locking it away is no good. You are supposed to practice or meditate on it everyday. Also, you are supposed to take only sa:thvik foods. Swami varu has explained many times about the importance of sa:thvik food. This body given to us like a temple – so we have to take care of it like we take care of a temple and remember that God dwells in us. You are supposed to eat only food offered to God.
Common Ingredients / Items not to be used (Forbidden)
- Onion, Garlic, Bottle gourd (Doodhi), Drumstick (Murunga) & leaves, Sorrel leaves (Gongura), Radish, Mushrooms, Eggs, White Egg plant, Fig fruit (Anjeer – dried / fresh)
- Already used oil
Only once in lifetime, so think well and decide to join the path of Sri: Vaishnavism.
To the extent possible try to avoid this. However, due to vruthi dharmam (requirement of your job) you may have to travel etc. So, if it is not possible to have home cooked food, take a little bit of water in your hand and sprinkle it on the food and offer it to Lord saying “Sarvam Sri: Krushna:rpanamastu” and then eat it as prasadam. If you are with other people and you are not able to do this in public, in your own mind offer the food to Lord and imagine that you are doing the prokshanam and offering it to Lord and say “Sarvam About Sama:srayanam jetuk.org 5 Sri: Krushna:rpanamastu” in your mind itself and then have this food as Lord’s prasadam.
Yes, you are asked to do upava:sam (fasting) the previous evening and do not eat or drink anything on the day of Sama:srayanam till it is completed.
There is no private room at the venue. You must come ready in the attire in which you can participate in the event.
Yes. You will receive Theertham and prasadam after the event.
